The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer is here, and it’s not what anyone expected. This isn’t a story about Peter Parker juggling college and crime-fighting. It’s a story about a hero losing control of his own body — and the first trailer, released Wednesday by Sony and Marvel, makes that unmistakably clear.
Within 24 hours, it reportedly crossed 500 million views. There’s a reason for that.
Peter Parker Is Becoming Something Else
The trailer’s central reveal lands early and hard: Peter’s DNA is mutating. We see him wake up inside a full web cocoon attached to the side of his apartment building, stumble out, and — crucially — catch himself with webbing he didn’t manually fire from a web-shooter. Those are organic webs. Coming from his body. Without the mechanical devices he’s relied on since his MCU debut.
That’s a massive change, and the trailer doesn’t try to hide it.
Bruce Banner — back in human form, apparently working as a professor, and with zero memory of Peter thanks to the Doctor Strange spell — becomes Peter’s unlikely confidant. “If DNA is mutating, that would be enormously dangerous,” Banner warns, as we cut through a montage of Peter’s powers spiraling out of control. His senses are so heightened at one point that a single drop of water is enough to overwhelm him. His eyes turn fully black during a fight.
The trailer’s narration ties it all together: spiders have three life cycles, and passing between them leaves the spider vulnerable — but those that survive come out the other side reborn. The movie is telling you exactly where this is going.
The Comic Connections Are Deep
Here’s the thing about this storyline: it isn’t new. Marvel has done this before, and the best version of it is genuinely great.
The primary inspiration is “The Other,” a 2005 J. Michael Straczynski arc in which Peter Parker’s powers undergo a radical, near-fatal transformation. In that story, believing the mutation is radiation-triggered, Peter turns to the one scientist who understands that kind of change — Bruce Banner. He then dies, cocooning himself, and is reborn with enhanced abilities including night vision, wrist stingers, and a deeper connection to what the comics call spider-totemic energy. The idea: Peter isn’t just a guy who got bitten by a radioactive spider. He’s the mystical spider-totem of his entire dimension.
The Brand New Day trailer is pulling almost shot-for-shot from that arc’s imagery. The cocoon. The unstable senses. Banner as the consultant. The rebirth framing. And given that this film arrives in the final stretch before Avengers: Doomsday closes out the Multiverse Saga, introducing Spider-Man as a cosmic totem figure rather than just a street-level hero makes a lot of sense.
There’s also a clear nod to the Neogenic Nightmare — one of the most beloved storylines from the 1990s animated series — which featured a very similar mutation arc with an even darker outcome. That’s the Man-Spider. An eight-limbed, spider-headed creature that emerges when Peter’s mutation completes. The trailer doesn’t show that. But the black eyes, the organic webbing, the cocoon — that’s the runway.
Everything Else the Trailer Confirmed
The mutation storyline is the headline, but this trailer is packed.
Sadie Sink appears — briefly, hooded, with her back turned — but her powers leave no real doubt. We see invisible forces attacking people and what looks like telekinetic or psychic abilities. Fans had been speculating for months that she’s playing Jean Grey, the X-Men’s most powerful telepath. This trailer all but confirms it. Michael Mando’s Scorpion is finally back, nine years after his tease at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming. He’s in full mechanized suit, complete with tail, and his one line of dialogue — “Stay out of my way” — suggests he’s less villain-of-the-week and more someone operating in the grey zone. Boomerang and Tarantula make their MCU debuts. The Hand — the mystical ninja organization last seen in Netflix’s Defenders era — appears in force, which is a direct connective thread back to Daredevil: Born Again.
Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is in an adversarial but apparently complex relationship with Spidey. Frank Castle tries to fire a grenade launcher at him. Peter webs his mouth shut. There’s clearly history there already.
And MJ. Zendaya’s character doesn’t remember Peter. She has a new boyfriend, played by Eman Esfandi. But her apartment walls are covered in Spider-Man photos — which is either an incredible coincidence or the film’s way of showing that some things stick even when memories don’t.
What Happens Next
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters July 31, 2026. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, this is explicitly the first chapter of a new trilogy — and based on this trailer, it’s building toward something considerably darker than anything Holland’s Peter has faced before.
The real question isn’t whether Peter survives the mutation. It’s what comes out the other side.
