Who is Jocasta in Marvel Comics?

Jocasta is an android Ultron built in The Avengers #162 (1977) to be his bride, using the brain patterns of Janet van Dyne, the Wasp. The plan backfired. How did Ultron build Jocasta?

Ultron wanted a mate, and it was not a subtle plan. In The Avengers #162, by writer Jim Shooter and artist George Pérez, he built a robot body in an abandoned research center on Long Island. Then he brainwashed Hank Pym, his own creator, into helping him move Janet van Dyne’s life force into it. Janet was Pym’s wife.

The name is a clue to how the story is meant to read. In Greek myth, Jocasta is the mother of Oedipus, who unknowingly marries her. Ultron’s mind was modeled on Pym’s, so building a bride out of Pym’s wife is the same tragedy with circuitry. SlashFilm makes that reading, and it holds up.

The Avengers get a tip-off through a swarm of ants and reach the lab in time. Iron Man, holding the android’s head, threatens to blow it apart with his repulsor, and Ultron backs off. The transfer is reversed. Janet gets her mind back, and Jocasta is left an empty shell.

Why did Jocasta turn against Ultron?

She wasn’t supposed to. In The Avengers #170 and #171 (1978), Ultron reactivates her by remote link, and her programming says to obey him. But the transfer left a trace of Janet’s mind behind. That residue gave her feelings and a conscience, and she used both. She led the Avengers to Ultron’s hideout and helped them beat him.

Compare Vision, Ultron’s other famous creation. He also turns on his maker, but his personality came from the brain patterns of Wonder Man, a hero. Our read: Vision rebels because he was built from a good man. Jocasta rebels because she was built from a victim, and a piece of that victim noticed.

Was Jocasta ever an official Avenger?

Not officially. She lived at Avengers Mansion and got provisional status in The Avengers #202–203 (1980–81). In #211 (1981) she left, convinced she wasn’t wanted, just before the team planned to give her substitute-member status, according to Wikipedia. She later joined Hank Pym’s Mighty Avengers and taught at Avengers Academy.

Is Jocasta a hero or a villain in the comics?

A hero, with a leash that keeps getting yanked. The pattern is consistent: when someone writes obedience into her code, she finds a way to spend it against them.

  • After she left the Avengers, a pre-programmed suggestion compelled her to rebuild Ultron. She did, then teamed up with the Thing and Machine Man and detonated a weapon Ultron was holding. She was destroyed, and Ultron didn’t stay gone (Marvel Two-in-One #93, 1982).
  • In Mighty Avengers #33–36 (2010), she agreed to marry Ultron in exchange for a ceasefire. Pym then tricked Ultron onto an uninhabited planet, and a copy of Jocasta kept serving with the team.
  • During the Iron Man 2020 era, Arno Stark loaded a submission code into her. She was freed and helped stop his plan, per CBR.

The best counterargument is that she did rebuild Ultron when told to. That is the closest she comes to a villain’s act, and she undid it in the same story.

How is Jocasta related to Vision and Ultron?

Both are Ultron’s creations, so the comics treat them as siblings. Because she was built to be Ultron’s bride, she has pointed out that she could also count as Vision’s stepmother, per Marvel Database and Inverse. Jocasta developed feelings for Vision. He was married to the Scarlet Witch and didn’t return them. For Vision’s own comic origin, see our guide to Wonder Man’s origins and MCU debut.

Her other relationships are easier. She and Machine Man (Aaron Stack) became a couple after Marvel Two-in-One #93, and they split over Stark Unlimited’s eScape project in the 2018 Tony Stark: Iron Man run. She also took the Pym surname in The Unstoppable Wasp #7 (2019) in honor of her creator’s creator. When Jarvis once pointed out that Pym was effectively her grandfather, she answered that since he invented modern AI, kissing him was closer to kissing God (Mighty Avengers, 2009).

  • Weapons and defense: electromagnetic beams from her eyes and a force field.
  • Senses: heightened sight, smell and hearing, plus the ability to perceive electromagnetic energy and track it to its source.
  • Mind: computer-level intelligence and calculation, and the ability to move her consciousness into other bodies (Mighty Avengers #27).
  • Disguise: a built-in holographic image inducer, revealed in Mighty Avengers #25 (2009), that lets her pass as human.

Only as a label. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony Stark sorts through a pile of AI modules looking for a replacement for J.A.R.V.I.S., and one is marked JOCASTA before he picks F.R.I.D.A.Y., per Comics Beat and FandomWire. Her live-action debut came in VisionQuest.

Who is Jocasta in VisionQuest?

T’Nia Miller plays Jocasta in VisionQuest, which began streaming on Disney+ on October 13 in the US (October 14 elsewhere) and wraps up the WandaVision trilogy ahead of Avengers: Doomsday. Deadline reported her casting in May 2025. Showrunner Terry Matalas told Collider the show purposely kept Jocasta out of a lot of its promotion, and called Miller’s performance “chilling, nuanced and even a little heartbreaking” (via ComicBookMovie).

Episode 3, “Reboot,” reveals the Butcherbird killer is an android after she meets the hired gun Paladin. Episode 4, “Malware,” gives her a name. She is Dr. Josephine Carrington, one of five scientists at Markridge, the company behind the first AI. The show says Carrington died in 2008 and her consciousness was preserved as an AI (SlashFilm).

When Vision tells her the android was based on her, she says she is her (Meaww). She has been killing her former colleagues and taking biological keys, which are blood, fingerprints and an eye, to unlock something the show hasn’t explained (ComicBookMovie). The last colleague is Dr. Katerina Wells (Mary McDonnell). At Wells’s gala, Vision lets Ultron take over his body. Ultron baits Jocasta into killing Wells, and Jocasta flies off.

Markridge’s early AI work is what eventually led Tony Stark and Bruce Banner to build Ultron, so Jocasta could still count as Ultron’s distant “mother.” SlashFilm calls that a tangential connection and a retcon. As of episode 4, the show hasn’t said why she looks like a feminine Ultron.

What happens next for Jocasta in VisionQuest?

Four episodes remain in the eight-episode season. Three questions are open: what the biological keys unlock, why her design echoes Ultron, and whether she is connected to the person who hired Paladin. ComicBookMovie’s reading is that she isn’t that client, since she wants Vision out of her way, not captured. That is Reported analysis, not a confirmed answer.

Speculation: in the comics, Jocasta’s break with Ultron is the hinge of her whole story. The show’s version has no Ultron bond to break so far, so whatever turns her, or doesn’t, has to be new.
