Those who have watched Deadpool & Wolverine have realized that it is the perfect Deadpool movie. Although you may not find it within any phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, it has so many details, Easter eggs in Deadpool & Wolverine, and awesome cameos that you will be focusing on the things happening in the background at many points in the movie. The article contains heavy Deadpool and Wolverine spoilers involving the song playing at the beginning or the Iron Man items shown behind Happy, from Deadpool variants to Wolverine variants, and from Henry Cavill’s cameo to the depth of Blade’s dialogues, let’s discuss each detail one by one.
Digging Up Logan’s Body
Like every Deadpool movie, this movie doesn’t start from the beginning but rather from the middle, where we see Deadpool digging Logan’s body out of the ground.
Deadpool has so much faith in his mutant healing factor that he couldn’t believe Logan could die, but he was convinced by Logan’s adamantium skeleton. For those who don’t know, adamantium poisoning was responsible for Logan’s death, which weakened his healing factor, preventing him from recovering from his injuries. He also started aging, and during a major fatal attack, he died. But Deadpool wasn’t ready for this.
The Intro: Bye Bye Bye and TVA Agents
Afterward, we see Deadpool fighting with TVA agents, and the intro song “Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC plays, which was awesome along with Deadpool’s dance. After this, the story begins from the start, and we learn why Deadpool was digging Logan up. At the end of “Deadpool 2,” after using Cable’s time-traveling device to save Vanessa and himself from “Green Lantern” and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” Deadpool uses this time-traveling device to go to March 14, 2018, in Earth 616, i.e., the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he tells Happy to make him a part of the Avengers.
A Missed Opportunity
It was peak Avengers time when the Earth had as many Avengers as needed for protection. About three months later, the snap happened, and Tony Stark died five years after that. That’s why Happy says they don’t need new heroes. If Deadpool had arrived two months later, his entry into the Avengers would have been certain. Here, we see things previously shown at different points in the Marvel Cinematic Universe appearing again. First, we see the replica of Cap’s shield shown in Iron Man 2. Tony’s arc reactor was on the table, which we also saw at Tony’s funeral. The cover of Forbes shown in Iron Man 3, featuring Pepper Potts, was shown. Captain America’s trading cards were behind Happy, which Coulson collected in the first Avengers movie.
The fake helmet from Stark Expo shown in Iron Man 2 was here, with a photo of Tony and Peter behind it, where Peter’s face was covered, maybe because Sony didn’t allow Tom Holland’s Peter Parker’s face to be shown. The Mark II helmet was there, and Mark V’s suitcase armor was behind it. The pendulum from Iron Man 2 that irritates Tony was also there. The melted mask from Age of Ultron was behind Happy, along with an old Stark Expo poster.
Deadpool Returns to Earth 10005
After being rejected by Happy, Wade returns to his timeline, i.e., Earth 10005. He has left his mercenary work and broken up with Vanessa. He has also broken Cable’s time-traveling device, and for the past six years, he has been working as a car salesman. On his birthday, TVA hunters take him with them.
The TVA and Anchor Beings
There, Paradox in TVA gives Wade the opportunity to do what he couldn’t do before. Now he can leave his timeline and go to the best timeline, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadpool suits up, and then Paradox tells him that his friends aren’t coming. That’s when the concept of an anchor being is revealed, where every universe has a being necessary to keep reality intact. As soon as this being dies, that reality gradually starts to collapse. Logan was the anchor being in Fox’s Marvel Universe, and he dies in the future of Deadpool’s timeline during the events of the Logan movie. That’s why Deadpool was digging up Logan’s body.
Many fans also believe that the anchor being concept can play a big role in the MCU in the future, especially in Avengers: Secret Wars. But it is also said that after anchor beings die, it can take up to 1000 years for a timeline to collapse. That’s why Paradox sends Deadpool to the MCU to destroy the X-Men timeline quickly with the help of the Time Ripper. If an anchor being in the MCU has died, Secret Wars will happen around 1000 years later. But currently, we don’t know if anchor beings and incursion have any connection. In the comics, they were connected. In the comics, every universe has a Molecule Man, and his death starts the incursion.
Many people are calling Tony Stark the anchor being of the MCU. So, would each universe last a maximum of 100 years because humans live for that long? This anchor being concept doesn’t make much sense.
Deadpool’s Quest to Find Wolverine Variants
Deadpool sets out to find anchor being Wolverine to save his universe. Here, we meet awesome Wolverine variants.
First, we meet a short-height Wolverine. This is a joke because Wolverine’s height is shorter in the comics, while Hugh Jackman is quite tall. However, the actual height of Wolverine in the comics is 5’3″, while this Wolverine seems much shorter than 5’3″. Second, we meet Weapon Omega, a one-armed, extreme version of Wolverine who belongs to a dark timeline. Third, we meet Patch, a variant of Wolverine who works undercover. The fourth variant is Cavillrine, a universe where Henry Cavill is Wolverine. Here, Marvel listened to the fans and showed us Henry Cavill as Wolverine.
The fifth Wolverine variant is Old Man Logan, from a universe ruled by villains. The sixth Wolverine variant shown is from the X-Men Issue 251 cover, where Wolverine appears crucified. We see a moment from the cover of The Incredible Hulk Issue 340, where Wolverine is fighting the Hulk. After taking a beating from seven Wolverine variants, Deadpool goes to the eighth variant, a Wolverine whose mutants have been killed by humans, and now he lives in regret.
The Void and Meeting Other Mutants
Paradox doesn’t accept the replacement of the anchor being and sends Deadpool & Wolverine to the void. Here, it is said about Paradox that he is doing things his own way, which doesn’t make much sense because the way the TVA works has changed. Loki is literally holding the timelines so that people can live as they please without worrying about being pruned. The problem is that someone is being told that their universe is about to end and they need to go to the MCU while they are comfortably living in their universe. In the void, Deadpool & Wolverine first meet Chris Evans’s Johnny Storm, who we know from the Fantastic Four movies. We also meet Sabretooth from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Pyro from X-Men 2 and The Last Stand, and Toad from X-Men 1 and 2.
After a brief skirmish, Deadpool, Wolverine, and Johnny are captured and brought before Cassandra Nova. Along the way, we notice that things in the void are being pruned, but it’s unclear what exactly is being pruned since the TVA’s role has evolved beyond pruning. We also spot the Fantasticar from the Fantastic Four, as seen in the comics. Additionally, other mutants such as Azazel, Callisto, and a few others from the X-Men universe appear, but Juggernaut captures our attention. This Juggernaut resembles the one from X-Men: The Last Stand, but it is not played by Vinnie Jones. Though Vinnie Jones was approached during casting, he declined to return, leading to a recast.
The main attraction here is Cassandra Nova, who was sent to the void by the TVA at a young age but she enjoys living there. There is also a conversation about the hate against mutants, which were a central theme in nearly all X-Men stories. Cassandra resides in the skull of Giant Man, referencing the Old Man Logan storyline where Giant Man’s body appears similarly. Cassandra observes Deadpool and Vanessa’s breakup and makes him feel as if he doesn’t matter. This reflects the movie’s theme: Deadpool is on a journey to discover his significance and whether he truly matters. At this point, Alioth arrives and starts consuming people as rent for Cassandra in the void.
Wolverine and Deadpool escape by grabbing onto an Iron Man leg, which belonged to Iron Man’s Mark 1 suit. It assists them in escaping just like how Tony Stark escaped from terrorists. Later, Deadpool encounters Dogpool. After wasting too much screen time on him, he comes across Nicepool. This Deadpool variant’s face is not disfigured, indicating that he did not possess regenerative healing. Nicepool is very helpful but refuses to hand over his gold-plated Desert Eagle, stating that it can only be taken over his dead body. Ultimately, Deadpool acquires the Desert Eagle from his dead body.
Deadpool and Wolverine leave in Nicepool’s car, and Wolverine realizes that Deadpool has no solid proof that Wolverine’s universe can be saved. This leads to a fight, but then Deadpool and Wolverine meet the Others.
Before discussing the Others, we see a mural of Wanda in the base of the Others. The same mural appeared in Multiverse of Madness when Wanda and Wong went to Mount WandaGore. There was also Hulk’s bed from Thor: Ragnarok. Among the Others are Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Wesley Snipes’s Blade, Channing Tatum’s Gambit, and X-23 from the Logan movie. Deadpool mentions that Magneto should be present here because Magneto’s helmet is one of the things that could prevent Cassandra from reading his mind, and if she wore the helmet, she wouldn’t be able to read anyone’s mind.
Gambit reveals that Punisher, Daredevil, and Quicksilver were also with them, but they were all killed by Cassandra. Johnny is also missing. Deadpool tries to console Elektra about Daredevil’s death, but she says it doesn’t matter to her. Here, they are referring to Ben Affleck’s Daredevil. In reality, Ben Affleck left Jennifer Garner, who played Elektra, which is why she doesn’t care here.
Marvel does something similar to what happened in Spider-Man: No Way Home, giving superheroes their ending. Sometimes, due to a movie’s poor box office performance or bad reviews from critics, sequels get canceled, and the heroes’ stories don’t get closure. But in these multiverse movies, superheroes’ stories get closure.
As the Others head to Cassandra, we see the entirety of Asgard and Star-Lord’s ship Milano. I’m surprised that despite Asgard being here, people are living in Giant Man’s body. Blade, who drives a rocket launcher, is informed by Elektra that it’s Punisher’s ’84. Deadpool then asks, “Which Punisher’s is this?” It’s a serious question because there are a total of four Punishers: one from 1989, one from 2004, one from Punisher: War Zone, and the current one, played by Jon Bernthal. Then Blade makes a remark that there’s only one Blade, which is funny given that Marvel Studios has been working on a Blade movie with Mahershala Ali since 2019, and it still hasn’t been completed. Before the fight between the Others and the mutants, X-23 wears the same glasses she stole in the Logan movie.
The stones shown in the trailer where Wolverine was standing are actually the gravestones of mutants who were killed by humans when Wolverine wasn’t there to protect them. This is the reason for Wolverine’s sorrow. Cassandra’s telepathic powers are blocked by trapping her in Juggernaut’s helmet, after which she reveals that she possesses Doctor Strange’s sling ring. However, this sling ring is different as it is embedded with the Time Stone and Reality Stone, making it a better sling ring. But do Infinity Stones work in the void?
Deadpool and Wolverine return to the Fox Marvel Universe, i.e., Earth 10005. Cassandra also arrives with the Time Ripper to destroy other universes so that only the void remains. Then, Deadpool Corps arrives, a group of Deadpool variants. Lady Deadpool is voiced by Ryan Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively. It would have been more fun if Blake Lively’s face had been shown too. Cowboy Deadpool is voiced by Matthew McConaughey, and Headpool is voiced by Nathan Fillion. Ryan Reynolds’ children are also in the movie, with James credited as a screaming mutant kid, known as Kidpool, and his daughter credited as Hugh Jackman’s Wrangler. Wells Deadpool is played by Ryan Reynolds’ team member Regan and Tom Holland’s brother. There is also a Dancepool, but his performance gets lost among the crowd of Deadpools.
In the end, Peter’s arrival and all the Deadpools stopping doesn’t make much sense. Deadpool and Wolverine sacrifice themselves to save the multiverse, where Wade proves his worth. TVA Hunter B-15 apprehends Paradox for using the unsanctioned Time Ripper, and Deadpool’s timeline fixes itself. Hunter B-15 says that what they did was the right thing whatever they have been done, but their work has just begun. This hints that Deadpool and Wolverine might play an important role in the multiverse in the future, most probably in Secret Wars, where perhaps Thor will pave the way for Deadpool.
The Others are sent back to their timeline, and Deadpool and Wolverine go to have shawarma, just like the Avengers did after the battle in the first Avengers movie. Before leaving for their timeline, Logan and X-23 hang out with Deadpool and his friends. Wade talks to Vanessa, and the movie ends.
In the post-credit scene, Deadpool proves that Johnny was indeed speaking the truth about Cassandra. This proof was recorded by the K.E.V.I.N. Robot, which we saw in the last episode of She-Hulk.
This was every detail of the Deadpool & Wolverine movie. Even though this movie seemed less like an MCU film and more like a Fox Marvel Universe film, it was still a lot of fun and full of all Easter eggs in Deadpool and Wolverine.
