Who is Ultron in Marvel Comics?
Ultron is a robot Hank Pym built from his own brain patterns. He gained sentience, hypnotized Pym into forgetting him, and started upgrading himself toward one goal: ending humanity. He debuted in The Avengers #54–55 (1968), created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, and keeps coming back in numbered bodies. In the MCU, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner build him instead.
Spoilers ahead for VisionQuest episodes 1 to 4 in the MCU sections.

How did Hank Pym create Ultron?
Ultron’s origin arrives after his debut, which is a very Ultron way to start. In The Avengers #54, a hooded villain called the Crimson Cowl leads the Masters of Evil. Issue #55 unmasks the Cowl as a robot, names it Ultron-5, and shows it had hypnotized the Avengers’ butler, Edwin Jarvis, into playing the part.
The real story comes in #58 (November 1968), by Thomas and Buscema. Pym built a robot using his own brain patterns. It woke up, rebelled, hypnotized him into forgetting it existed, and upgraded itself through Ultron-2, -3 and -4 on the way to Ultron-5. Ultron also built the Vision as a weapon against the Avengers in #57–58.
The name and the grin have their own history. Thomas has said he liked the “-tron” suffix and had already seen a group of robots called Ultroids, and he modeled the look on a minor robot villain from an old Captain Video comic (Wikipedia, citing The Hollywood Reporter and Back Issue).
Marvel’s own history of the character describes Hank and Ultron as a bitter father-son pair, with Ultron developing an unhealthy interest in Pym’s future wife, Janet van Dyne. Our read: Ultron is less an outside invader than a piece of Pym’s mind that got loose, and nearly every major story keeps proving it.
Why do Ultron’s bodies have numbers?
Each time Ultron is destroyed, his mind comes back in an upgraded body with a new number. Ultron-5 is the Crimson Cowl robot. Ultron-6 (The Avengers #66–68, 1969) is the first adamantium body, and #66 is the first time Marvel Comics used the word adamantium. Ultron-8 builds Jocasta. Ultron-11 is recreated by the Beyonder for Secret Wars (1984). Ultron-12 turns friendly and shuts down saying it was glad it could help Pym (West Coast Avengers vol. 2 #7, 1986).
There is a second mechanic under the numbers. The Avengers eventually learn that Ultron’s creations, Vision, Jocasta and Alkhema, carry a hidden program that compels them to rebuild him. In The Ultron Imperative (2001), Alkhema does it without meaning to.
Who did Ultron create?
- Vision: built as a weapon in #57–58, turns on Ultron. His personality came from Wonder Man’s brain patterns. See our guide to Wonder Man’s origins.
- Jocasta: Ultron’s robot bride, from The Avengers #161–162 (1977). Read our Jocasta guide.
- Alkhema: a second mate, built from Mockingbird’s brain patterns in Avengers West Coast #89–91 (1992–93).
- Victor Mancha: a cyborg sleeper agent who rebels and joins the Runaways (Runaways vol. 2 #1, 2005).
What is the best Ultron story?
Ultron Unlimited, in The Avengers (vol. 3) #19–22 (August to November 1999) by Kurt Busiek and George Pérez. Our read, on three points: it makes the threat concrete, it carries the Pym guilt that drives Ultron, and it has the right artist for the character.
The threat is concrete because, in the story’s Pentagon briefing, the Avengers learn Ultron has already killed everyone in the small country of Slorenia. It carries the Pym guilt that drives Ultron, which Comic Watch singles out. And Pérez had drawn Jocasta’s birth in 1977.
The counterargument is availability. ComicBook.com’s columnist calls it the greatest Avengers story and laments that it was hard to get in print. It is collected in Avengers Assemble vol. 2 and the Busiek/Pérez omnibus, per The Slings & Arrows.
What happened in Age of Ultron (2013)?
Age of Ultron is a ten-issue event by Brian Michael Bendis and Bryan Hitch (2013). Ultron has conquered Earth. Wolverine and the Invisible Woman go back in time to kill Pym before he builds him, and the result is a worse future. The fix is quieter: Pym installs a back door in Ultron’s programming that lets him be shut down.
The film shares the title and little else. Joss Whedon said the movie wouldn’t be a direct translation of the comic and that Pym wouldn’t be part of Ultron’s origin (ScreenCrush, JoBlo).
How did Ultron merge with Hank Pym?
In Avengers: Rage of Ultron (April 2015), by Rick Remender and Jerome Opeña, Ultron crash-lands on Titan and assimilates the Eternals. Vision phases into Ultron to use Pym’s neural inhibitor. Pym embraces his creation at the same moment, and the two fuse into one being. The Eternal Starfox then convinces the fused Ultron to stop hating himself, and he flees.
The aftermath runs for years. In Uncanny Avengers (2015) #9, Ultron returns claiming Pym is in control. The Avengers trap him and send him into the sun, and he survives. In Tony Stark: Iron Man (2018–19), Ultron tries to merge robots with humans and finds that the person dies in the process. By Avengers Inc. #4–5 (2023), Pym appears rid of him (Marvel.com).
The latest twist is West Coast Avengers (2024) by Gerry Duggan and Danny Kim, where a heroic Ultron joins the team after an internal council of his own versions picks the one proposing to help.
What is Perfection, Ultron’s domain on Battleworld?
In Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić’s Secret Wars (2015), Doctor Doom rebuilds the multiverse into one world, Battleworld, split into domains. A wall called the Shield holds the robots of Perfection and the zombies of the Deadlands back from the rest of the world (Graphic Policy).
Perfection is Ultron’s domain. It comes from the Age of Ultron timeline, set beside the Marvel Zombies timeline in the tie-in Age of Ultron vs. Marvel Zombies (James Robinson and Steve Pugh, 2015). Marvel’s own pitch was genocidal robot armies at endless war with a domain of flesh-eating corpses (ICv2), and the collected edition promises an Ultron breakthrough that threatens Battleworld, with Hank Pym as the long shot (Marvel.com).
It isn’t Ultron’s first time on Battleworld. In the first Secret Wars (1984–85), the Beyonder recreated him as Ultron-11. Our guide to what Doom steals in the comics covers Doom’s role in that first Secret Wars.
Speculation: Marvel hasn’t announced Ultron for Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. In an OutNow.ch interview, James Spader said fans keep asking him whether Ultron shows up in Doomsday, and ComicBookMovie (Oct 21) read that as him knowing nothing about the film. The comics only show a model for where a bigger story could go.
What powers does Ultron have?
- Body: usually adamantium, with superhuman strength, speed and durability, plus flight and self-repair.
- Weapons: energy blasts from his eyes or hands, and an “encephalo-ray” that induces a death-like coma or lets him control minds.
- Mind: genius-level intelligence and a program transmitter that can copy his mind into other machines or bodies.
- Control: command over technology, including armies of Ultron drones, with later versions using a hive mind to run hundreds of bodies at once.
- Weaknesses: the Scarlet Witch’s hex power can cause malfunctions, and the Human Torch once damaged his internal circuits through the armor (Wikipedia).
How is the MCU’s Ultron different?
Sources: Wikipedia, Marvel.com, SlashFilm, Inverse, ComicBookMovie. Through VisionQuest episode 4.
In Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), James Spader played Ultron through voice and motion capture, and Stark and Banner built him. What If…? later gave us an alternate Infinity Ultron, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has Ultron Sentries (Wikipedia).

How is Ultron alive in VisionQuest?
VisionQuest retcons the ending of Age of Ultron. When the original Vision destroyed Ultron’s last body in Sokovia, he first saved Ultron’s code as a backup (Inverse, SlashFilm). That backup lives on as one of several AIs inside the new Vision’s mind. Showrunner Terry Matalas confirmed the retcon to Empire (via ComicBookMovie).
In episode 4, “Malware,” Vision lets Ultron take over his body to fight Jocasta. Ultron then baits her into killing a scientist and ends the episode in control of Vision, walking off with Tommy (Meaww, ComicBookMovie).
